Plan your training
LTFT training planner
See how less-than-full-time working or time out of training may affect your rotations, training-stage dates and estimated CCT.
When did you start?
West Mid changeovers are based on the first Wednesday of February or August.
Your five core placements
Choose whether each ST1/ST2 placement is in GP or hospital. Your final 12-month ST3 placement is fixed in GP. The dates update automatically.
Placements 1–4 are six months each. Placement 5 is the single 12-month ST3 GP placement. If LTFT or time out extends training beyond the core programme, the planner adds further GP time automatically.
Add any changes to your training
Add each change to your working percentage, plus any periods completely out of training.
Working percentage changes
Your training is assumed to be 100% until the first change you add.
Each percentage continues from its start date until the next change you add. If there is no later change, that percentage is assumed to continue for the remainder of training. Add a 100% change when you return to full-time training.
Time out of training
For example parental leave, sick leave or OOP.
Your training journey
The placement blocks show where you are working. The markers show the exact dates your accumulated full-time-equivalent training moves you into ST2, ST3 and CCT.

How this estimate is calculated
Training starts on the first Wednesday of February or August. Planned placements normally run to the next February/August changeover. Training is assumed to be 100% until the first working-percentage change entered. Each percentage then continues until the next change, or to the end of training if there is no later change. Working at less than 100% reduces the full-time-equivalent experience credited; it does not itself change the planned changeover date. Time out of training earns no training experience. If a trainee returns after a rotation has already started, the period from return to the next February/August changeover is modelled as Interim GP rather than assuming they rejoin the same post mid-rotation. An interrupted planned GP placement is then repeated from the next proper changeover. Hospital experience accrued before time out still counts: an interrupted Hospital placement is repeated only if total accrued Hospital experience is still below 10 months full-time equivalent; at 10 months or more, that interrupted Hospital rotation is skipped and the planner moves on to the next planned placement.
ST1, ST2 and ST3 are based on accumulated full-time-equivalent training, using the actual calendar length of each full-time training year rather than a fixed 365-day assumption. This means a stage transition can fall part-way through a six-month placement. If the five core placements do not provide enough FTE experience, additional GP time is added automatically. Hospital experience is calculated as FTE hospital days divided by 30.25.
Your actual programme, LTFT arrangement and CCT date must be confirmed through the normal GP School process. Please do not make plans based on this calculator alone.
