General Practice: Day-To-Day Tools

GP Notebook
GP Notebook is a great website resource to have on your desktop during clinical sessions and to review your learning. Quick reference to guideline based differentials, testing and management. For free access you can sign up to a Univadis account.

Patient
Patient is a fantastic resource for patients as well as medical professionals. It offers simple, easy-to-understand patient leaflet information on a very wide range of health conditions. In addition there is a medical professionals hub with regular articles summarising medical updates across the entire GP curriculum. Another great resource for day-to-day use during consultations.

British National Formulary (BNF + BNFC)
Multi-award-winning essential medicines information app that makes it quick and easy to access practical, evidence-based medicines information whenever and wherever you need it. Updated monthly, the BNF + BNFC app provides up-to-date guidance on prescribing, dispensing, and administering medicines – even when you’re offline.

NICE CKS
NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries Developed on behalf of NICE, Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) are concise, accessible summaries of current evidence for primary care professionals. There are over 350 topics to choose from. The topics focus on the most common and significant presentations in primary care. They give information to support health professionals with safe decision-making and improve standards of patient care.

MDCalc
MDCalc is a really useful website for access to online medical calculators and clinical assessment tools – from PHQ9/GAD7 to CHADS-Vasc to Cockcroft Gault…it’s got it all!

General Practice: Update Courses

Red Whale
Red Whale Knowledge is run by Red Whale, an organisation with regularly updated guidelines and evidence pooled together for you in quick summary breakdowns. A paid subscription is required for full access but they do offer a weekly free email of some limited content called Pearls.

NB Medical Education
NB Hot Topics offer live and on-demand CPD webinar courses to fit your schedule. A paid subscription is required for the full CPD access but they do offer complimentary Keep It Simple Summary (KISS) articles.

Driving & Aviation Guidance

Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
Official guidance on assessing fitness to drive based on medical conditions and symptoms. Essential knowledge for everyday practice and particularly useful for both the AKT and SCA exams.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
Helpful guidelines from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regarding medical conditions and fitness to fly.

Interpretation of Investigations

Buku Medicine
The Buku Medicine app is a useful tool for interpreting abnormalities that are obtained on common laboratory blood tests.

ECG Library
A library of abnormal ECGs for developing skills for ECG interpretation.

Dermatology

DermNet
The world’s leading free dermatology resource. Helps you to make evidence-based decisions on how to care for skin conditions. In addition they have excellent leaflet resources to share with patients. One of the best features is a library of authentic patient cases with images; covering various symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and outcomes that can be expected in the real world. The quizzes are also a really fun and interactive way of learning more about dermatology in your trainer-trainee tutorials.

Diabetes UK
Offers a helpful patient education and clinician resource for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

The Doctor’s Kitchen – Diabetes
Helpful nutritional advice page which can be used alongside your treatment plan.

Public Health Collaboration – Sugar Infographics

The UK Sepsis Trust
Concise and easy to understand GP-specific factsheet style resources on managing suspected sepsis based on age: children under 5 years of age, children aged 5-11 years and children over 12 year and non-pregnant adults.

NICE Antimicrobial Stewardship
A list of all NICE publications on antimicrobial stewardship. Includes guidance, advice and quality standards to ensure appropriate prescribing of antimicrobial agents. Please check whether you local practice or ICB have their own localised guidance or formulary.

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM)
CALM is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and the cause of 18 deaths every day.

The Calm app is the number one rated app for sleep, meditation and relaxation. Meditation aid for patients and clinicians alike.

MIND
MIND act as advocates providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Hounslow Youth Counselling Service (HYCS)
HYCS is a registered charity that has been offering a free, confidential counselling service for young people aged 11-25 in Hounslow Borough for more than 30 years. The service is available through self-referral to those that live, study or work in Hounslow. It also has a great ‘Self Help Hub‘ which provides signposting to other resources available for all.

Kooth
Free online anonymous counselling for 10-16 year old children.

Family Lives
A charitable organisation offering comprehensive family support services. They also work in many different areas offering tailored support around issues such as bullying, special educational needs, parenting support and support for specific communities. 

Musculoskeletal (MSK)

Professor Hasan Tahir – Patient Exercise Sheets
Excellent collection of home exercise sheets for printing and giving to patients – covering all major body parts.

Versus Arthritis
A website aimed at patients from the Arthritis Research Council. Helpful and engaging information on MSK pain by body region as well as support with learning to live with arthritis.

Pain Health
Website from the Australian Department of Health – aimed at supporting patients to manage and live with chronic pain.

‘Fit for Travel’ is a free public access website providing up to date health information for the UK public on avoiding illness and staying healthy when travelling abroad.
